I really enjoyed Ponyo with my son, I loved the animation and the environment created, and the general weirdness.
I don’t think I’m interested in anime, per say, but if I really liked this movie and wanted to find others that was less of a kid’s movie, what would you recommend? Anything by Hayao Miyazaki or others. Thanks
I was looking at some of these DVDs on ebay, many say language is Japanese. Have any been translated to English, or do they usually just have subtitles?
There are so many Miyazaki works with Studio Ghibli that are absolutely awesome:
Howl’s Moving Castle
Castle in the Sky
Princess Mononoke
Kiki’s Delivery Service
Spirited Away
My Neighbor Totoro
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
edit: All the movies that I’ve listed have English versions, I believe they’re all done by Disney, just like Ponyo.
Back in the 60′s, Astroboy took the US airwaves by storm. This Japanese animation was one of the first to hit our shores. A whole generation of children where transfixed by this new robot hero, along with the other anime imports of the time, Gigantor and Kimba the White Lion. Now you can own your

Growing up from the US, most kids have grown up with cartoons such as Bugs Bunny and Popeye which portrays the good overcoming evil as well as satires that pokes fun of political figures in a none threatening way. For kids, majority of the time these cartoons have provided a positive impact rather then negativity or problems.
With the recent months in the rising popularity of japanese animation especially the series of Naruto Episode, many parents are now worried that it may pose as a negative influence for children. Not only does it portray a lot of problems shown within society, it also contains a lot of adult humor as well. Is this something that we should allow our children to be influenced with? Will this type of influence give children bad ideas about the society or their engagements with one another?
Before we further examine this topic, we have to first understand the background of the anime Naruto. The story revolves around Uzumaki Naruto, a kid that has an inner demon of a nine-tailed fox who has once destroyed many villages until a powerful kage or a leader of a village who sealed his inner demon away through a powerful jitsu or a mystical technique of a ninja. The demon is then locked away and the story of Naruto begins with the life and adventure that Naruto has to face. All the while knowing that the demon inside of Naruto may come out someday both from his friends and foes.
From the outer appearance and storyline, naruto doesn’t seem harmful for children nor is the general storyline provides any hint of negativity in anyway. However, with different Naruto Episode there has subtle hints of sexuality. For one, Naruto suddenly changes into a woman wearing a bikini from a man in ways through this Episode Naruto seduced his teacher. In another Naruto Episode, various characters posses characteristic of a woman although by nature they are being presented as man.
For parents, these are major signs of red flags that tells parents that they are not suitable for children due to inappropriate content. I however on the other hand dare to say that it’s actually okay for children to be exposed for these type of influences. Children nowadays are exposed with sex, violence, and crime whether it is from television or in the public area although some may minimize such influences. Whether you believe it or not, children pick things up rather quickly from adults. Instead of prohibiting negative influences, I believe parents should really educate kids at an early age the right and wrong and lead by example which is something that is lacking at large in causing a lot of division amongst the family and the society as a whole.
Even if we have successfully screened out the popular anime Naruto from our children in an effort to protect our children, is this eliminating the heart of the problem? I dare to say no and that we really need to examine ourselves in our communications with our kids in an educational way in light to talk about such events and things. Animations such as Naruto will only increase in this age of globalization and we need to learn how to cope with it rather then excusing ourselves from facing the true reality of this world. With proper education and support, I believe we can still enjoy anime the same way that we had enjoyed various cartoons in a positive manner with our children.

Fantasy – general DVD – Like the popular television series and first animated movie, this feature-length adventure follows the post-Bruce Wayne Caped Crusader, young Terry McGinnis (voiced by Will Friedle), an eager teenager with the same passion for vengeance that made Batman Gotham City’s hero. This time around, Batman’s most infamous archenemy, the Joker, returns for one last round with the Dark Knight, recruiting a gang of misfits to wreak havoc on Gotham, with his psychotic sights set on the Clown Prince of Crime’s old foe: Wayne. Mark Hamill steals the show as the Joker, bringing back his gleefully insidious cackle, which remains one of the more resonant memories from Batman: The Animated Series. Unlike that series, though — which mixed art deco, film noir, and Max Fleischer’s Superman cartoons of the 1940s — Batman Beyond owes more to the hyperkinetic action of Japanese animation, affording one of the world’s most popular crime fighters an exhilarating update. Rachael Leigh Cook, Melissa Joan Hart, and Henry Rollins also make good voice appearances. The DVD features deleted scenes, audio commentary by the filmmakers, a behind-the-scenes documentary, and enough other extras to make this film a harrowing good time for fans of the television series — and beyond! – Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (DVD)

READ THE DETAILS FIRST!!!
Since the term anime is just a shortening for the term Animation, why is Japan’s Animation the only ones called Anime?!!!
From a technical point couldn’t any type of animation, I’ll use Animations like Spongebob Squarepants for example can also be referred to as Anime since they are also Animation?
Im not saying that they’re the same thing, and dont tell me that Anime is different because I already KNOW that, and dont tell me the differences between Anime and other animations because I know all of the differences, in fact I’ve stated those differences HUNDREDS of times before. So Im not looking for a lecture or a guide of how Anime is different from other Animations, Im well aware of that!!!
For this question Im not focusing on the types of animations, Im focusing on the term Anime and the full version of the word.
japanese animation may be unique, but ANIMATION IS ANIMATION even if the word is shortened.
Bonus:
1)Did Japan have Animations before Anime?, If so then what name did those animations go by?
And dont say standard Japanese-Art because obviously the Japanese were making things like Paintings centuries before Anime was even thought of.
For this I mean actual animation as in movement, not just pictures.
2)Would it really make a HUGE difference if all Animations were called Anime?
3)Would it really make a difference if Anime weren’t called Anime and were just simply called Cartoons instead?

Thanks for answering:)
Nerds Rule~!
I know that Anime is an Animation originated in Japan!!!!!!
Ok, I made a huge error, I wasn’t aware that all animations were referred to as Anime in Japan.
Thanks for correcting me…..
In Japan, the word ‘anime’ is actually used for ALL types of animation, not just animation with Japanese origins. For example, (your example ,hee) Spongebob would be referred to in Japan as anime.
My theory on why we use the word ‘anime’ to describe just Japanese animation is because, at least up until the mid 80′s, most Westerners were not familiar with the Japanese style of animation. It was so different, so foreign…So, naturally, people wanted to give it a different name…’anime’, not just ‘cartoons’. Also, because of the maturity level in many anime. In the Western world, we think of cartoons mostly as childish and made specifically for children, with no adult content. However, anime includes this; and should therefore not be lumped in with ‘cartoons’. Look one of the very first manga every translated (I know, not an anime, but it is a fine example) "Lone Wolf and Cub". It is a gem, by the way…but very, very mature. I mean, you simply cannot call it a cartoon. As I said before, ‘cartoons’ targeted audiences are generally thought of as children, but when anime hit the Western world, it was realized that they are not for children (at least many of the first ones to come over, especially during the video burning wave). That is my theory, at least.
Bonus:
1)Did Japan have Animations before Anime?, If so then what name did those animations go by?
- Many animations were known as ‘kashibonya’ in the late 1950′s. These were manga, basically for rent. Because of the economy slump, people couldn’t afford entertainment like movies, so comics were a good, cheap source. They actually started off as satirical newspaper strip comics, interestingly enough.
And dont say standard Japanese-Art because obviously the Japanese were making things like Paintings centuries before Anime was even thought of.
For this I mean actual animation as in movement, not just pictures.
- manga is animation with movement, so I included that in my above answer because it came before ‘anime’…
2)Would it really make a HUGE difference if all Animations were called Anime?
- Well, it already is in Japan. But, I think that because the Western world has been calling just Japanese animation ‘anime’, that they would not so easily automatically suddenly call all animation ‘anime’. It just wouldn’t happen so easily.
3)Would it really make a difference if Anime weren’t called Anime and were just simply called Cartoons instead?
- The answer to this is in my original paragraph before the bonuses. Too much history that we cannot simply ignore.
Random BQ: Do you agree with this picture?
- I think it is funny. I am fully aware of the derogatory sense of the word ‘otaku’, along with both its Eastern and Western origins and histories. I don’t necessarily ‘agree’ with it…I mean, look at Kosuka from Genshiken. He is an otaku type but has a girlfriend, is good-looking, and cares for his hygiene.
But, I never take that stuff personally, because I embrace the fact that it really is my lifestyle (social withdrawal and all)…Although, I have my values and political views.
